Signs You Need Detox

Signs & Kinds of Detox

Pure Recovery is about “admitting we are powerless over alcohol, or any addiction.” Pure Detox is about how to curtail the chemical dependence of you brain and body’s cells, as well as psychological dependency.

Alcohol detox is an important preliminary step in the management of alcoholism. It is a medically supervised period of alcohol withdrawal. During this period, a doctor may administer medications to control symptoms, and the individual is monitored by health professionals to ensure his or her safety. In addition to medical care during withdrawal from alcohol, the person usually also receives education about his or her alcohol problem and its treatment..1

For chemical dependency of drugs or alcohol, the main symptom is withdrawal. This can include:

• Tremors • Sweating • Headaches • Abnormally high heart rate • Nausea

Detoxification Techniques to alleviate alcohol withdrawal symptoms include:

• Evaluating any per-existing medical conditions that could affect detox

• Medication that allows for safe, effective transition during detoxification

• Nutritional care to ensure the patient stays healthy through withdrawal symptoms

• Detoxification followed by continued assessment of patient needs

Understanding Detox

  1. Causes of Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome
  2. Symptoms of Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome
  3. Assessment of Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome
  4. Treatment of Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome
  5. Preventing Future Alcohol Withdrawal Episodes

Alcohol withdrawal syndrome is a potentially life-threatening condition that can occur in people who have been drinking heavily for weeks, months, or years and then either stop or significantly reduce their alcohol consumption.

Alcohol withdrawal symptoms can begin as early as two hours after the last drink, persist for weeks, and range from mild anxiety and shakiness to severe complications, such as seizures and delirium tremens (also called DTs). The death rate from DTs — which are characterized by confusion, rapid heartbeat, and fever — is estimated to range from 1% to 5%.

Because alcohol withdrawal symptoms can rapidly worsen, it’s important to seek medical attention even if symptoms are seemingly mild. Appropriate alcohol withdrawal treatments can reduce the risk of developing withdrawal seizures or DTs.1

Picking a Detox Program

Alcohol rehabilitation takes place in a variety of settings:

Hospital- or medical-clinic-based programs. These programs offer both alcohol detox and alcohol rehab on an inpatient basis in specialized units. They are less common than they used to be, primarily because of changes in insurance.

Residential rehab programs. These programs can last from a month to more than a year and take place in a residential environment. Often, the treatment is divided into a series of stages that the person goes through. For instance, in the beginning, a patient’s contact with others, including friends and family, is strictly limited. The idea is to develop a primary relationship with the other residents who are also recovering from alcoholism. Eventually, the person will be allowed more contact with people outside the residential community and may even go back to work or school, returning home to the treatment facility each day..[2]
